New Soldier Training builds the foundation of a Tomb Guard. Volunteers must memorize an enormous body of knowledge including the complete history of the Tomb, Arlington National Cemetery, and every Medal of Honor recipient buried there. They must be able to recite any of this information on demand.

Uniform preparation is an art form — hours of daily work pressing, shining, and perfecting every element. Precision drill begins immediately — the sentinel's walk, rifle manual, and changing of the guard ceremony must become second nature.

Physical training standards are among the highest in the Army. Soldiers must maintain an immaculate appearance at all times, meeting height and weight standards that go beyond Army minimums.

Training Focus Areas
  • Tomb history and Arlington National Cemetery knowledge
  • Medal of Honor recipient biographies and burial locations
  • Uniform preparation — pressing, shining, inspections
  • Precision drill and ceremonial movements
  • Rifle manual of arms for ceremonial weapon
  • Physical fitness and appearance standards
  • Military bearing and discipline under public observation

Key Events
Sentinel's Walk21 steps, exactly 90 feet
Changing of the GuardFlawless ceremony execution
Supervised Mat WalksUnder senior Sentinel guidance
Wreath CeremoniesDignitary and public ceremonies

Relief Training is where Tomb Guard candidates begin walking the mat under supervision. The sentinel's walk — 21 steps across 90 feet, a 21-second pause, a precise turn, and repeat — must be executed with mechanical perfection every single time.

The Changing of the Guard ceremony is practiced hundreds of times. Every movement, every rifle inspection, every step must be identical. Fractions of an inch matter. Senior Sentinels observe and correct relentlessly.

Candidates who cannot maintain the precision, the uniform standards, or the physical appearance required are removed from training. There is no room for "close enough" at the Tomb.

Relief Training Events
  • Sentinel's walk — 21 steps, 21-second pause, turn
  • Changing of the Guard ceremony rehearsals
  • Rifle inspection sequence and manual of arms
  • Walking the mat in all weather conditions
  • Wreath-laying ceremony procedures
  • Challenging unauthorized visitors after hours
  • Maintaining bearing under intense public scrutiny

Requirements
Written Exam95%+ required to pass
Uniform InspectionMust be flawless
Practical EvaluationWalk the mat under grading
Final Board ReviewSenior NCO evaluation

Sentinel Qualification is the culmination of nine months of relentless preparation. Candidates must pass a comprehensive written exam scoring 95% or higher on Tomb history, Arlington National Cemetery, Medal of Honor recipients, and ceremonial procedures.

The uniform inspection is absolute — a single thread, a dull spot on brass, an imperfect crease results in failure. The practical evaluation requires walking the mat under formal grading conditions, demonstrating every movement with zero deficiency.

The final board review by senior NCOs determines whether a Soldier has demonstrated the knowledge, bearing, precision, and dedication required to wear the Tomb Guard Identification Badge — the second rarest badge in the U.S. Army.

Qualification Requirements
  • Written knowledge exam — 95%+ score required
  • Flawless uniform inspection — zero deficiencies
  • Practical mat walk under formal evaluation
  • Changing of the Guard ceremony execution
  • Senior NCO board review and oral examination
  • Demonstrated commitment to lifelong standards
Seasons
Winter — Cold, Rain, Snow & Ice
Dec – Feb
Avg High40 – 50 °F
Avg Low25 – 35 °F
ConditionsSnow, ice, freezing rain
Guard Status24/7/365 — never stops
UniformOvercoat authorized
Biggest ChallengeMarching on ice, numb hands

Winter at the Tomb means walking the mat in freezing temperatures, snow, and ice. Sentinels march their 21 steps regardless of weather. The marble plaza becomes treacherous when iced over, but the walk must remain precise. There are no weather cancellations.

Winter Conditions
  • Guard walks continue through snow, ice, and sub-freezing temps
  • Overcoats are authorized but standards remain identical
  • Rifle handling in numb conditions requires extra discipline
  • Holiday crowds — Wreath Across America in December
  • Overnight shifts in the coldest hours of the year
Spring — Peak Ceremony Season
Mar – May
Avg High55 – 75 °F
Avg Low35 – 55 °F
ConditionsRain, warming temps
Key EventMemorial Day ceremonies
Visitor VolumeHigh — tourist season begins
Biggest ChallengeCrowd management & rain walks

Spring brings the highest-profile ceremonies of the year. Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery is the most significant event — the President typically lays a wreath at the Tomb. Sentinels must be at absolute peak performance during this period.

Spring Conditions
  • Memorial Day — highest-profile ceremony of the year
  • Presidential wreath-laying events
  • Increasing visitor traffic and public scrutiny
  • Rain walks — mat becomes slick, uniform gets soaked
  • Transition from overcoat to standard uniform
Summer — Heat, Humidity & Peak Visitors
Jun – Aug
Avg High85 – 95 °F
Avg Low65 – 75 °F
HumidityExtreme — DC summer heat
Visitor VolumePeak — thousands daily
Guard RotationEvery 30 min (vs. 1 hr in winter)
Biggest ChallengeHeat exhaustion in full uniform

DC summers are brutal in a full ceremonial uniform. Temperatures above 90°F with high humidity create heat casualty risk. Guard rotations shorten to 30 minutes during summer months. Sentinels must maintain perfect bearing while fighting heat exhaustion.

Summer Conditions
  • 30-minute guard rotations due to heat (vs. 1 hour in cooler months)
  • Full wool uniform in 90°F+ heat and humidity
  • Peak tourist season — maximum public observation
  • Independence Day ceremonies and events
  • Hydration management critical between shifts
Fall — Veterans Day & Cooling Temps
Sep – Nov
Avg High55 – 80 °F
Avg Low35 – 60 °F
ConditionsCooling, rain, wind
Key EventVeterans Day — Nov 11
Guard RotationReturns to 1-hour shifts
Biggest ChallengeVeterans Day ceremony precision

Fall brings Veterans Day — the second most significant ceremony at the Tomb. National attention focuses on Arlington as dignitaries, veterans, and the public pay respects. Sentinels must deliver flawless performance under intense scrutiny.

Fall Conditions
  • Veterans Day (Nov 11) — major national ceremony
  • Transition to overcoat as temperatures drop
  • Wind and rain increase — mat conditions change
  • Guard rotation returns to 1-hour standard
  • Preparation intensifies for holiday season events

Key Takeaway: The Tomb Guard Identification Badge is earned through months of unrelenting discipline, memorization, and physical perfection. There are no shortcuts. The standard is absolute — every uniform flawless, every step precise, every fact memorized. Only ~20% of volunteers earn the badge, and fewer than 700 have been awarded since 1958.

Sentinel's Creed

My dedication to this sacred duty is total and whole-hearted. In the responsibility bestowed on me, never will I falter. And with dignity and perseverance, my standard will remain perfection.

Through the years of diligence and praise and the discomfort of the elements, I will walk my tour in humble reverence to the best of my ability.

It is he who commands the respect I protect, his bravery that made us so proud. Surrounded by well-meaning combatants who struggle to comprehend the depth of his valor, so combatants I shall remain — and I will carry their memory with me until the day I too join their ranks.
