Army Engineers build, breach, and fight. From demolitions and route clearance to bridging and construction — Engineers provide mobility, countermobility, and survivability across every battlefield.
The 12-Series is the Army's most versatile combat support branch. From breaching enemy obstacles under fire to building airfields in austere environments, Engineers are the force that shapes the battlefield.
Leading the Army's engineering projects and combat support missions. From construction to demolition, Engineer Officers build the way forward.
The 12B Combat Engineer (Sapper) is the backbone of the Engineer branch. 12Bs operate at the point of contact alongside Infantry and Armor units.
Providing the means for the Army to cross rivers and gaps. Bridge Crewmembers are the masters of tactical bridging and watercraft operations.
Specialists in underwater engineering, salvage, and demolition. Army Divers perform complex missions beneath the surface.
Masters of the earth and terrain. Horizontal Construction Engineers operate heavy equipment to build the Army's vital infrastructure.
Providing the energy that powers the Army. Prime Power Specialists operate and maintain the most advanced power generation systems.
Providing the geographic intelligence that wins battles. Geospatial Engineers are the masters of mapping, data analysis, and terrain visualization.
The pinnacle of enlisted Engineer leadership. 12Zs serve as operations sergeants major and first sergeants at battalion and brigade level.
Junior enlisted Engineers begin their career as sappers, equipment operators, or bridge crewmembers depending on their MOS. Combat Engineers (12B) immediately begin working with demolitions, breaching, and route clearance operations at the squad level. Promotion to SPC/E-4 typically occurs within 2-3 years and brings increased responsibility.
This is the time to pursue additional schools, earn equipment operator licenses, and build the foundation for NCO leadership. Engineers qualify for some of the Army's most technically demanding training opportunities.
The NCO corps is the backbone of the Engineer branch. Sergeants (E-5) lead sapper teams of 3-4 Soldiers, while Staff Sergeants (E-6) lead squads responsible for demolitions, breaching, or construction tasks. This is where Engineer leaders are forged — directly responsible for the training, discipline, and tactical employment of soldiers in combat and construction operations.
Completion of BLC (Basic Leader Course) is required for E-5, and ALC (Advanced Leader Course) for E-6. Sapper Leader Course and Ranger School significantly improve promotion potential for Engineer NCOs.
Senior NCOs represent the most experienced and capable leaders in the Engineer branch. Sergeants First Class (E-7) serve as Platoon Sergeants, Master Sergeants/First Sergeants (E-8) lead at company level, and Sergeants Major/Command Sergeants Major (E-9) serve at battalion, brigade, and higher.
These positions are highly competitive and board-selected. A record of combat engineering leadership, Sapper tab, advanced school completion, and consistent top-block evaluations are essential for progression.
Enlisted Engineers with leadership potential and a bachelor's degree (or willingness to earn one) can pursue commissioning through Officer Candidate School (OCS) or the Green-to-Gold program. OCS is a 12-week intensive course at Fort Moore, while Green-to-Gold sends soldiers to college full-time with an ROTC scholarship.
Former enlisted Engineers who commission bring invaluable technical experience in demolitions, construction, and combat engineering that sets them apart. Engineer Officers lead platoons and companies responsible for shaping the battlefield across every domain.
| Installation | Location | Division / Unit | Type |
|---|---|---|---|

| Fort Liberty | NC | XVIII Airborne Corps / 20th EN BDE | Airborne |
| Fort Campbell | KY/TN | 101st Airborne (Air Assault) / 326th EN BN | Air Assault |
| Fort Carson | CO | 4th Infantry Division / 4th EN BN | Mechanized |

Engineers serve at nearly every Army installation worldwide. Duty station assignment depends on unit needs, airborne/air assault qualification, and soldier preference (CONUS/OCONUS).
One of the most versatile branches in the Army. From breaching enemy obstacles in combat to building roads and bridges across the globe, Engineers shape every battlefield.
Explore Training CoursesCombat Engineers (12B) are the Army's demolitions experts. From C4 and TNT to shape charges and det cord, Sappers master the art of controlled destruction on the battlefield and in training.
Demolition calculations are a core 12B skill. Master charge placement, P = RKC formulas, timber/steel cutting charges, and breaching calculations. Practice until it's second nature.
12N Horizontal Construction Engineers earn civilian-transferable heavy equipment licenses. Bulldozers, graders, scrapers, excavators — these skills pay well in and out of uniform.
The Sapper Leader Course is the gold standard for Engineer leaders. 28 days of advanced demolitions, mountaineering, and reconnaissance. The Sapper tab is the most respected symbol in the Engineer branch.
Route clearance is one of the most critical and dangerous missions Engineers perform. Detecting, marking, and neutralizing IEDs and obstacles to keep supply routes open for maneuver forces.
Engineer promotion to E-5 averages 3-4 years. BLC completion, a strong NCOER, Sapper tab, and airborne/air assault wings dramatically accelerate the timeline.
Engineers are the most versatile combat support branch in the Army. If you want to blow things up, build things under fire, operate heavy equipment, or bridge any gap, the 12-Series is the path. Arrive in shape, master demolitions, and never quit. Essayons.
