Key Topics
Anatomy & PhysiologyMusculoskeletal systems

Nutrition ScienceMacros, hydration, performance
Injury PreventionCommon training injuries
Exercise PhysiologyEnergy systems & adaptation

The Exercise Science phase builds the academic foundation every Master Fitness Trainer needs. Students learn human anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology — the science of how the body moves, adapts, and responds to physical stress.

Nutrition science covers macronutrient balance, hydration strategies, and performance fueling. Injury prevention training teaches students to identify risk factors, recognize overtraining symptoms, and implement corrective strategies before soldiers get hurt.

Written examinations test comprehension of exercise science fundamentals. Students who cannot demonstrate mastery of the scientific principles will not advance to Program Design.

Exercise Science Topics
  • Human anatomy — musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory systems
  • Exercise physiology — energy systems, muscle fiber types, adaptation
  • Kinesiology — joint mechanics, planes of movement, biomechanics
  • Nutrition — macronutrients, hydration, pre/post-workout fueling
  • Injury prevention — overuse, acute injuries, corrective exercise
  • Principles of training — overload, specificity, periodization
  • ACFT event analysis — physical demands by event
Program Design — Practical Application
Weeks 3 – 4
Duration2 Weeks
LocationFort Moore, GA
FocusBuilding & leading PRT programs
Key Events
Program DevelopmentBuild unit-specific PRT plans
Evaluated PRT SessionConduct & lead a full session
ACFT ProgrammingEvent-specific training design
Fitness AssessmentsEvaluate individual soldiers

Program Design is where the science becomes practical. Students apply everything from Phase 1 to build real physical readiness training programs tailored to specific unit missions and individual soldier needs.

Each student must conduct a fully evaluated PRT session, demonstrating proper exercise selection, cueing, safety standards, and the ability to coach soldiers through correct movement patterns. Teaching ability matters as much as knowledge.

The capstone requires designing a complete unit fitness program that addresses mission-specific physical demands, presents a progressive and periodized training plan, and accounts for injury prevention and recovery.

Program Design Events
  • Periodization — building progressive training cycles
  • Unit PRT program design — mission-specific programming
  • ACFT-focused training plans — event-specific preparation
  • Evaluated PRT session — lead a full training session
  • Individual fitness assessment — evaluate and prescribe
  • Corrective exercise programming — address weaknesses
  • Teaching methodology — cueing, demonstration, coaching

~90% Grad Rate — But You Have to Earn It

Written exams, evaluated PRT sessions, and a complete program design capstone. The science is the standard.

Key Takeaway: MFT is an academic and practical course, not a physical gut-check. The soldiers who fail are those who arrive without studying exercise science fundamentals. Read FM 7-22 cover to cover, study basic anatomy, and practice leading PRT sessions before you report.

Train the Trainer — Build the Force

I am the Master Fitness Trainer. I am my commander's principal advisor on physical readiness. I possess the knowledge of exercise science and the skill to design training programs that build combat-ready soldiers.

I will lead from the front in every training session. I will hold myself to the highest physical standard because my soldiers deserve nothing less. I will prevent injuries through intelligent programming and protect the fighting strength of my unit.

I am the standard. I train the trainers. I build the force.
