The Classroom phase covers Army motor vehicle regulations and administrative procedures. Students learn the regulatory framework governing vehicle operations, starting with AR 600-55 (The Army Driver and Operator Standardization Program) and the responsibilities of the Master Driver/Trainer.

Licensing procedures are a major focus — students master the OF 346 (Motor Vehicle Operator's Permit), dispatch operations, and the administrative requirements for maintaining a unit-level driver training program. Record keeping, accident reporting, and composite risk management complete the week.

A comprehensive written examination at the end of Week 1 tests knowledge across all regulatory and administrative topics. Students must pass this exam before advancing to the Practical phase.

Classroom Topics
  • AR 600-55 — Army Driver and Operator Standardization Program
  • Licensing procedures — OF 346, dispatch, and record keeping
  • Unit driver training program development and management
  • Accident reporting — DA Form 285, investigation procedures
  • Composite risk management for vehicle operations
  • Vehicle maintenance management — PMCS and TM procedures

Night DrivingBlackout & NVG operations
Convoy OpsPlanning & execution

The Practical phase puts students behind the wheel and in front of the class. Hands-on vehicle operation across wheeled and tracked platforms ensures every graduate can demonstrate proficiency before teaching others.

Teaching methodology is the real test. Students must prove they can evaluate other soldiers, administer licensing road tests, and conduct effective driver training. Night driving operations under blackout and NVG conditions are evaluated. Convoy planning and execution rounds out the week.

The practical examination determines whether a student can build and manage a complete unit licensing program from the ground up. Graduates leave certified to run their unit's entire driver training operation.

Practical Training Events
  • Hands-on vehicle operation — wheeled and tracked platforms
  • Administering licensing road tests — evaluator methodology
  • Teaching methodology — conducting effective driver training
  • Night driving operations — blackout and NVG conditions
  • Convoy planning, briefing, and execution
  • PMCS execution and maintenance management
  • Practical examination — complete driver program demonstration

Key Takeaway: The Master Driver Course is about knowledge, not physical toughness. Arrive having studied AR 600-55, understand the licensing process, and be ready to teach. The written exam accounts for the majority of failures — know the regulations cold before day one.

Nothing Happens Until Something Moves

The Master Driver/Trainer is the backbone of every unit's vehicle operations program. From licensing the newest private to managing the maintenance program for the entire fleet, the Master Driver ensures the unit can move — safely, legally, and on time.

Graduates of the Master Driver/Trainer Course carry the responsibility for every vehicle key issued, every license granted, and every soldier who gets behind the wheel. When convoys roll and missions depend on mobility, the Master Driver's standard is the standard that matters.
